GEODynamics, a technology and manufacturing provider of perforating, downhole completion, intervention and wireline conveyed tools and services, released two new technologies at the recent SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference.

Throughout the conference, which was held Feb. 1-3 in The Woodlands, Texas, GEODynamics’ strategic projects team discussed stage design challenges as well as demonstrated the company’s technologies and services to improve efficiency for horizontal completions.

Data analytics tool accurately predicts proppant and fluid flow

GEODynamics has released its new StageCoach data analytics modeling tool. The field-proven StageCoach model accurately predicts how proppant and fluid will flow through wells to measurably improve well productivity by 10% to 15% and is included with GEODynamics’ perforating technologies.

Historical assumptions in the industry have held that proppant and fluid flow uniformly through wells. However, GEODynamics’ primary research utilizing surface tests with six U.S.-based operators demonstrates this is untrue and can negatively impact well stimulation. StageCoach addresses this challenge by accurately modeling proppant transport, distribution and erosion across clusters. This allows operators to be more deliberate when selecting hole size and/or charge type, enabling them to achieve the assumed distribution without cost variances. It also empowers operators with the foresight to know when and where to invest to maximize returns.

The StageCoach analytics package integrates computational fluid dynamics modeling of proppant slurry movement with full-scale proppant transport surface test results into an engineering model that optimizes job parameters to ensure more uniform proppant distribution from cluster to cluster. As the model provides accurate data rooted in facts rather than interpretation, frac designs are more robust and reliable, preventing the superclusters that can cause well-to-well contact.

“We have gained compelling insights through the direct research and application of the StageCoach model, which have the potential to dramatically improve overall frac design and well productivity,” said Steve Baumgartner, senior technical adviser.

The StageCoach model accounts for a host of factors, such as pump schedules, proppant loading, charge selection, perf spacing and phasing, and stress shadowing, and it provides access to the company's strategic projects team of technical advisers.

Composite frac plug with quick connect technology increases efficiency and cost savings

GEODynamics has also released its new EVOLV composite frac plug with quick connect technology. The new EVOLV plug eliminates many horizontal completions challenges and has been shown to allow wireline firms to improve time savings at the well site by 95%, 15 seconds compared to 300 seconds with conventional plugs, enabling operators to realize greater efficiencies in the oil field.

The EVOLV plug eliminates performance variables by employing a novel shear ring design that eliminates screws, which conventional plugs rely upon. The ring design reliably and accurately clicks into place every time in 15 seconds, compared to the typical three- to five-minute makeup time when using screws. With an average 58 stages per well, the time and labor savings obtained with the EVOLV plug are significant. Additionally, the proprietary ring design ensures operators achieve full setting force, which eliminates potential leak paths, erosion and pressure loss.

The new, fully molded composite EVOLV plug reduces material volume by 17% and is 3.5 inches shorter than its predecessor to decrease mill-out and drilling times for reduced rig time. The average milling time for the new EVOLV plug is approximately three to six minutes per plug. Additionally, the shorter length and composite material lowers the amount of plug debris. Unlike conventional plugs, the EVOLV plug ensures a cleaner well, free of metal fragments.

Rated for 10,000 psi and 300 F, the EVOLV plug with quick connect technology is paired with a FracTrap ball conveyance and retrieval system, and the FracTrap technology enables operators to confidently run ball in place.

The ring design of the EVOLV plug is designed to save operators and wireline firms substantial time and potential risk with an easier, more reliable plug assembly. Operators can continue to rely on the consistency of the new plug and leverage a more reliable shearing mechanism.
