The drilling of the Mayaya Centro-X1 IE well (stratigraphic investigation), located in the north of the department of La Paz, shows signs of a new oil basin in the northern sub-Andean region, with prospects to bring investments, reported the Executive President of YPFB, Armin Dorgathen Tapia.

“Today we are in large projects such as the Mayaya Centro case, we are waiting for results, but today the drilling is giving us very interesting indications of a new basin (…). In Mayaya, in the north of the country, we will probably have, if the plan goes well, an oil basin. Bolivia is a gas country, perhaps tomorrow it will be an oil country, I hope we can be oil and gas producers.”

Dorgathen said that there are still many opportunities in the southern sub-Andean (Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca and Tarija), “the option of opening new basins as is the case of Mayaya Centro, which is northern sub-Andean (La Paz, Beni and Pando), or "Projects like Tomachi and Gomero that go towards the Madre de Dios basin, the objective is to do this exploration in stages, from projects that are already known to opening new basins and also bringing investments in the north of the country."

The Mayaya Centro X1 IE project is located in the municipality of Alto Beni, La Paz, and has the objective of evaluating the Retama and Tomachi formations at a depth of 5500 m. Currently, it has a progress of 93%. It records very encouraging a priori results, the extracted sand came out fluorescing and impregnated with oil.

The state oil company has been executing the upstream reactivation plan (PRU) since 2021 with positive results. A portfolio of 42 projects are being executed, of which several have already been executed and others are in execution, approval and preparation. Between 2014 and 2015, no exploratory projects were registered, 2020 was a lost year, since no plans or projects were drilled or approved.

“The results are tangible: Yope-X1, Yarará-X1, Yarará-X2, were positive projects. Churumas-X2, where we did the tests and we have around 9 million MMcfd of production; Another positive project was the Remanso-X1, and from this we are already planning the horizontal drilling of a second well, to begin draining a fairly important reserve estimated at 0.7 trillion ft3 stressed the executive of the state oil company.
