Want a Glimpse into E&Ps’ Second Half? Hold, Please

In the absence of step-change catalysts during the second quarter, many independent E&Ps heralded tax benefits to come from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act—but the devil's in the details.


Late summer second-quarter earnings reporting was colored largely by modest efficiency gains that decreased capex and incrementally boosted production. But much of what came through in bold are intermittent showings of significant tax savings from the Trump administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB).

But the devil is, as always, in the details. And details are largely TBD.

Energy markets remain skittish at the prospect of a 2025 oil oversupply fed by slowing economies, “structural adjustments to trade flows,” and as is often the case, OPEC’s desire for market share.
