Canada-based E3 Lithium has received regulatory approval for the second phase of its Clearwater project demonstration facility, the company said Sept. 11.
Located in Alberta, the facility aims to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate from brine using direct lithium extraction (DLE).
“We are thrilled to see the permits granted for Phase 2 of our Demonstration Facility, including the recently approved Directive 065, and look forward to launching the drill program to kick off the next phase of technology demonstration,” E3 Lithium CEO Chris Doornbos said. Directive 065 is the project’s mineral scheme, including subsurface injection of produced fluids.
Phase 2 involves drilling a production and injection well pair to confirm Leduc Aquifer flow rates and reservoir characteristics. The wells will be tied into the existing 30-column DLE system and purification units that were commissioned during Phase 1, creating a fully integrated brine-to-battery-grade lithium carbonate process system, E3 said in a news release.
The company said it plans to begin the drill program in early- to mid-October after Phase 1 commissioning is complete.
