E&P Highlights: April 7, 2025

Here’s a roundup of the latest E&P headlines, from BP’s startup of gas production in Trinidad and Tobago to a report on methane intensity in the Permian Basin.

From a new software partnership between two major companies to a vessel equipment contract, below is a compilation of the latest headlines in the E&P space.

Activity

BP Starts Production from Cypre Gas Project off Trinidad and Tobago

BP Trinidad and Tobago’s (BPTT) Cypre development has delivered its first gas.

Cypre is one of BP’s 10 major projects expected to start up worldwide from 2025 to 2027. Production from Cypre will make a significant contribution toward the 250,000 boe/d combined peak net production expected from these 10 projects.

Cypre, BPTT’s third subsea development, will feature seven wells tied back into the existing Juniper platform. At peak, it is projected to deliver 250 MMcf/d, equivalent to 45,000 boe/d. The first phase of the development—four wells—was completed at the end of 2024. The second phase is expected to commence in the second half of 2025.

TGS Begins Expansion of Node Coverage in Gulf of Mexico

Energy data and intelligence provider TGS has begun a project to expand seismic node coverage in the Gulf of Mexico, adding more than 1,100 sq km in the Mississippi Canyon, Ewing Banks and Grand Isle South areas.

The Amendment 4 project will feature TGS' Gemini enhanced frequency source, offering lower frequency and improved signal-to-noise for ultra-long offset ocean bottom node seismic compared to conventional seismic sources. This will enhance input data for TGS' elastic full waveform inversion (eFWI) algorithm, resulting in more accurate subsurface imaging of the subsalt geology in the region.

The acquisition phase of this program is scheduled for completion in second-quarter 2025, with final deliverables available in second-quarter 2026.

Permian’s 2023 Methane Intensity Second Lowest on Record

Methane emissions in the Permian Basin were 0.49 mt/boe in 2023, up from the previous year’s record low of 0.39—but down 65% from 2015, when intensity reached a peak, according to Texans for Natural Gas, a campaign of the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association. The years 2022 and 2023 measurements were the lowest intensities on record.

The group said record production, depressed Waha Hub prices for natural gas and takeaway capacity constraints contributed to the increase from 2022. It said estimates are showing that intensity declined about 14% in 2024, continuing a trend of decreases.
