The Homer City Generating Station, once the largest coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania, is being razed to create a 3,200-acre data center campus fueled by natural gas.

Homer City Redevelopment and Kiewit Power Constructors announced the plan on April 2.

Construction begins in 2026, after the delivery of seven GE Vernova gas-fired turbines, according to the announcement. The brownfield project will take advantage of facilities already at the site, including connections to the area’s power grid and water access.

The turbines are expected to deliver up to 4.5 gigawatts of power for the AI data centers. The project’s initial cost is slated at more than $10 billion.

The gas will be supplied from the nearby Marcellus Shale but the announcement did not name the provider.
