WELS, Austria — Steel rope business Teufelberger-Redaelli has achieved a new Guinness World Record (its 5th win) with Flexpack, the world's heaviest steel rope. The rope weighs 495.9162 tons, has a nominal diameter of 160 mm and a minimum breaking load of 2,166 mT with a nominal length of more than 4 km.

The rope was produced at the Teufelberger-Redaelli facility in Trieste, Italy. The manufacturing process spanned seven months, involving more than 50 resources in design, procurement, processing and deployment.

The steel rope is designed to meet the most challenging subsea applications, such as offshore abandonment and recovery, and pipelaying operations. The new design optimizes all axial and transverse forces to which the rope is subjected.

Flexpack offers more than 65,000 tons of high-performance wire ropes ranging from 76 mm to 160 mm in diameter supplied for offshore applications. Teufelberger-Redaelli has produced more than 1,323 km of ropes. This new rope specifically will be used for abandonment and recovery missions on winches with a safety working load of 750/1,000 tons in subsea operations conducted in ultradeep waters.
