Petrobras estimates producing an additional accumulated volume of 860 million barrels of oil equivalent in the Marlim field, in the Campos Basin, as a result of the field revitalization project. The number considers the total volume of oil to be produced until 2048, the year scheduled for the end of the concession period. Before the revitalization, the expectation was that Marlim production would end in 2025 with the return of the field. The revitalization project, which replaced nine platforms with two FPSOs (floating production, storage and transfer units), will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55%, when compared to the peak predicted in the old units.
In daily volumes, the revitalization of Marlim with its two platforms, FPSO Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi, is expected to add at least 115 thousand bpd to production in the Campos Basin in the coming years.
“There is still a significant volume of oil to be produced in Marlim. We extended the useful life of the field by 23 years and we want to achieve additional accumulated production of more than 860 million barrels of oil equivalent in this field with the project”, said Mariana Cavassin, executive manager of Production Development Projects at Petrobras. The executive presented Petrobras' advances in revitalizing mature fields in a panel held this Monday (6/5), at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), in Houston.
The revitalization of Marlim was the main project presented by Petrobras at the Conference and was responsible for winning the Distinguished Achievement Award , an award granted by the OTC to projects that offer innovative technological contributions to the global offshore industry.
Renewed Campos Basin
By 2028, Petrobras will invest US$ 22 billion reais in the revitalization of the Campos Basin and install, between 2025 and 2028, three new production platforms, in the Albacora, Barracuda-Caratinga and Jubarte fields, the first of the three to come into operation, in the Espírito Santo portion of the Campos Basin.
The Campos Basin, where the first discoveries occurred in the 1970s, was responsible for 20% of the 2.8 million barrels of oil (boe) produced daily by Petrobras in 2023. With the revitalization projects, which include interventions in wells already in operation, drilling new wells and installing more modern platforms, the company intends to increase the volume of oil extracted from the reservoirs (recovery factor) in the Campos Basin and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
“For the revitalization of the Campos Basin, we use an instrument called Master Plan, which indicates the best alternatives to increase the recovery factor of the fields, through the drilling of new wells, 4D seismic, extension of the useful life of assets, up to replacement of the existing infrastructure in the fields”, said Paulo Marinho, executive manager of Exploration and Production in Deep Waters, in the same panel.
The Campos Basin revitalization program is the largest recovery program for mature deepwater assets in the world.
History of awards at OTC
This is the second time that Petrobras has been awarded for innovations implemented in the Marlim field. In 1992, OTC awarded the technological advances achieved by the company that made it possible for the global oil and gas industry to use deepwater production systems.
In its search for innovations, Petrobras was awarded five times by the OTC and two other times in the Brazilian edition of the conference.
