The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management锟絪 Marine Minerals Information System data services are relocating to the Azure Cloud Environment on March 6, 2026.

MMIS is an Enterprise Geospatial Information System that supports BOEM锟絪 marine minerals exploration and leasing. MMIS includes a collection of over 30 years of geophysical (e.g., shallow seismic, bathymetry, and sidescan sonar) and geotechnical (e.g., vibracore and sediment grab locations, and associated laboratory analyses) derived data and information products. These datasets are critical to supporting Outer Continental Shelf beach nourishment and coastal storm risk management projects and helping to mitigate OCS space-use conflicts.

Migrating MMIS to the Department of the Interior锟絪 Azure platform will enable BOEM to leverage shared cloud and GIS infrastructure. MMIS data services will be updated as follows:

Established in 2019, the MMIS provides a means for BOEM to gather, process, analyze, maintain, store, and disseminate data relating to OCS marine minerals. The MMIS supports the development and distribution of the National Offshore Sand Inventory and National Offshore Critical Minerals Inventory. It is imperative that BOEM knows where OCS marine mineral resources are available so that the bureau can effectively manage their use.
